It was a very good day

I am sitting here this evening holding my 15-year old cat on my lap. She has, somewhat uncharacteristic of recent years, 'come out of the closet' (literally) and decided she needs some love. When she was younger, she always spent the evenings on my lap, but in the last few years she has gotten more aloof. She has also gotten slower and grumpier. But then I think I have too.

Today was a good day. The afternoon was very nice and warm and E and I spent quite a bit of time outside in the backyard. We ran around, looked at the dogs that live in the house behind us. E slid down the slide and I spun him around in circles.

He loves to play with the rocks. We sit at his little kid's table (no small feat for someone with a beam as wide as mine) and he gets handsfulls of rocks out of the yard. As a sidenote for those who have not been in the desert southwest, our backyard has been xeriscaped; meaning we have lots of rocks, very few plants and no (yes, none; not a speck) of grass. We play with rocks a lot.

I try to make rocks as educational as I can. 'Mommy has two rocks. [hide one in my hand] Now there is just one.'

E points at his enormous pile of rocks and says, 'Two rocks!'

Maybe he won't be a mathematician.

'This rock is up! This rock is down!'

'My rock!'

Okay. Scratch engineering.

He loves the moon. We have to go outside multiple times a day to check for the moon. For E, anything in the sky is either the moon or a star.

E points at the sun, 'Moon!'

'No, E. That is the sun.'

'Moon!'

Okay, forget astronomy. They are all just poor academics anyway.

It was a good day. I hope yours was as well.

Crazy weather

This past weekend was gorgeous. It was in the 70s, sunny and warm. I was composing a post about springtime. About how the flowering trees have burst forth wearing their beautiful pink and white blossom coats. Trees and shrubs are showing new, tiny green shoots. Flowers are beginning to poke their eager heads out of the ground searching for sunlight.

Then, this morning, it was....snowing.

WTF??!!?

27 months old

My dear little boy:

Today you are 27 months old. You are no longer a helpless infant. You can run and laugh and talk. You kiss the cat and tease the dog and can jump with both feet off the ground. You have grown so much, my little one. You have so far to go. I can hardly wait to see you come of age.

In this past month you have added to your vocabulary. You can put two words together and make a sentence. You have discovered 'dog poop' and 'more': 'more milk', 'more cracker', 'more cheese.'

You have discovered birds and airplanes and the moon. We have to go outside a dozen times a day so you can look at the 'moo'. Every time you hear an airplane you have to go and point at it. Sometimes you even wave and say 'bye-bye' to the plane as it flies overhead.

You have grown so much. You can now even reach the light switches that you so love to switch on and off. You are so tall! You are taller than boys a year older than you are.

Happy 27-months old, my sweet little boy.

Too cool!

That's my boy!

I've just figured out how to add pictures to my blog!! Is that too cool or what? Expect to see lots of pictures of my little guy.

Another new phrase...

Well...I suppose it is not that new, but I think it's awful funny. One of E's favorite phrases has become 'dog poop.'

My, what these little people do pick up!

Be Afraid...be very afraid...

My son has just learned a new and very dangerous concept. I had quite hoped that it would be some time before he learned this horrible and terrible set of words and phrases. It scares me even to think of this sweet, lovely child with such power.

Yesterday...he said...MINE! Yes. MINE. And then not long after, he said "that's MY cookie"; "that's MY car"; "that's MY whatever". Ooooo, I shiver even now just to think of it.

Now I am frightened.

Friday beginnings

I had just stepped out of the shower and was in front of the mirror applying all sorts of unguents to try to slow Time's onrushing chariot when I noticed that The Boy was in the shower stall on hands and knees scrubbing the bottom of the shower with my just-used washcloth. Now, normally I would not stem a budding house-cleaner in the making, but I had just gotten him dressed. His pants, those that I had to snag out of the dryer this morning, were soaking wet. Crap!

Lifting the now-crying, kicking child out of the shower, I pulled the washrag from his hand and put him on the floor where he collapsed into a whiny, wet pile.

Thank god it's Friday.

Nasty cold

I have the world's worst cold. I can smell and taste nothing. The cardboard I had for dinner last night was wonderful, thank you. I am hacking and coughing and sound very sexy. My manager said that she could hear me coughing and that if it kept up I should get it checked as a friend of hers turned out to have walking pneumonia.

Great.
